Terrestrial digital and satellite television systems

In the language of telecommunications, digital terrestrial television, in code TDT or DTT, is often abbreviated as Digital Terrestrial, is represented terrestrial television in digital form. From a technical point of view in fact, the television information is an information contained in an electrical signal and as such can be represented in either analog or in digital form. Also the analog representation is used for terrestrial television. This is called terrestrial television but also analogue terrestrial television and, for the type of representation used for the electronic information,  it is opposed to digital terrestrial television.

The main benefits arising from the introduction of TDT are:

-          a greater number of available channels, thanks to coding techniques of the signal source which allow the reduction (compression data) up to 1/5 of the frequency band used for transmission of a channel

-          a better quality image / audio, the digital signal in fact, thanks to techniques for channel coding, is less subject to interference and can convey content video in 16:9 and audio with characteristics very similar to DVDs

-          ability to offer interactive programs, so the user can for example make judgments or answer quizzes directly with the remote

-          less electromagnetic pollution due to the need to lower transmission power

-          possible transmission in double / multiple audio and then, for example, in several languages

-          possible transmission in high definition

-          possible transmission in 3 dimensions

In accordance with recent EU regulations, EU member states are converting, or they are going to convert their infrastructure for the diffusion of TV channels, moving from analog to digital systems, in according to schedules decided autonomously by the authorities of various countries.
The activation of the digital terrestrial television in Italy comes from the process of implementation of EU recommendations on transition from traditional analogue terrestrial television to digital terrestrial television.

New Devices

The new devices that must be integrated to your own TV at home according to the latest European standards will be defined outside receiver decoder,  of which you can see some examples here below. In addition to televisions, in fact, generally any device for the reception of television channels, such as Videotape recorder and TV cards for computers, now must have an external decoder.
